Description

Allen Springs on the Metolius River.  In this horizontal composition, a long exposure draws the moving water into silky, white strands and sheets.  The image is divided into thirds, the upper third being the vibrant greens of verdant fern growth above the springs, the middle third the white, silky strands of the cascading water, and the lower third, the darker water of the Metolius River into which the Allen Springs feed.  A fallen tree bisects most of the scene, breaking up the horizontal lines with a diagonal motif which emphasizes the motion of the water.  The Metolius River is a spring-fed tributary of the Deschutes River, and is found in central Oregon near the town of Sisters (named after the Three Sisters mountains).  It winds its way through the Deschutes National Forest and feeds into Lake Billy Chinook before finding its way to the Deschutes River.  It is famous for its fly-fishing, the game fish being rainbow trout, bull trout, and kokanee salmon.  The Metolius River hosts several campgrounds along its course, one of these being the Allen Springs Campground, at which are found the subject of this photo, Allen Springs.  The springs pour from a hillside wooded with Ponderosa pine, straight from the ground, into the river.  Because the Metolius River is solely spring-fed, its waters are exceptionally cool, clear, and of consistent volume throughout the seasons.  Look also for my other shots of central Oregon and of scenics around all of Oregon and other places.  Stock photo.
